Unless you learned French in Quebec, you will need subtitles. Limit yourself to the ones that run around three minutes. Clips I remember fondly include Willy Waller, a Wild West gun fight, tourists in Paris, and Halloween.
Some clips REALLY lean into the local accent. Perhaps those are less fun if you can’t hear it. And I think the creator loves triangulating between English and standard French, which again might be difficult to catch. Perhaps Willy Waller and the gun fight are the easiest to appreciate. In any case, even if you don’t find them funny, they won’t overstay their welcome. Enjoy!
A lovely tour d’horizon of our weird and wonderful country, Noah. Thank you.
You manage to include Guy Maddin, but can't even name-drop SCTV? Come on, Noah, don't make Johnny LaRue mad.
I mean, I could have just had 32 items on Canadian contributions to comedy.
So true.
Pretty heartwarming. Thank you.
The best of Têtes à claques is brilliant.
That I haven’t seen! I’ll check it out.

My French is garbage, so I'd need subtitles regardless. Thanks!

I liked this, Noah, but I'm struck by how many of your signifiers already seem drawn from a past country.
Well, I’m an old guy. But at least the Matthew Rankin film was from last year. And Stratford is still up and running. And they still do wear poppies.
Stratford still fantastic. Will check out the Rankin film. Poppies on the decline though.
