It has been nearly two months since I last posted here. Where the heck have I been? As it happens, I’ve been making a movie. This past Monday night, we wrapped principal photography on RESENTMENT, my debut feature film as a director.
Directing this film was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’ve been trying to get into that chair for about six years now, and I still can’t quite believe it happened. There were multiple points along the way where I didn’t believe it was going to, but it did. I was there. And for all the trials and tribulations along the way—and I could tell some stories on that score; buy me a drink if you want to hear them—we got amazing stuff in camera. My cast’s performances exceeded my wildest expectations, plumbing depths I didn’t know were there in my script, and truly coming together as a company. My cinematographer and her team worked miracles on a shoestring budget; every frame looked beautiful. My production designer built a gorgeous set, wardrobe and HMU created great looks—I am honored and humbled by both the artistry demonstrated and the effort put in by everyone on the cast and crew.
Now, after a brief break, we go into post-production. As we get further along in that process, we’ll start putting out more and more material about the film. I don’t know how much I’ll be posting about it here—certainly I’ll post about major milestones, but I don’t want to turn this space into a pure vehicle for self-promotion. One thing I’ll definitely do is post links here to places where you will be able to keep up with developments on the film front more regularly.
I hope you’ll all do so. I can’t promise that if you like my writing you’ll also like my filmmaking, but I certainly hope there’s some correlation.
In the meantime, I’ll be back before too long commenting on my usual litany of topics from politics and policy to religion and culture. I may be a bit kinder than before in my commentary on other people’s films, though. I always thought I knew how hard it was to make a movie. In fact, I had no idea.
Congrats, Noah! I'll definitely buy you that drink one of these days.
I love to hear stories like this. Congratulations!!
